45 Days
45 Days is a set of minimalist glass sculptures that utilize a series of texts in which I summarized the news for 45 days between January 6th and February 20th, 2020. Initially appearing on Instagram, each day’s headlines became its own dense prose poem. These texts were then etched into custom glass objects that are lit from within, bringing the text into view in an approximately 30-minute cycle and presented sequentially or in individual combinations.
In making the news into an object versus its typical stature as paper or as data, the objects hold a fragile permanence, a fixity of the time, distilled through my singular experience and voice. These 45 days of summarized news become an archive of the time – flawed, funny, partial and idiosyncratic takes on a moment of precipice as COVID creeps into the picture just ahead of the global lockdown and the pre-echoes of the January 6th insurrection that followed a year later reframe the inherent conflicts held within.
This project was realized over 2023 and early 2024 with the support of the glass geniuses at MDSG Studios, and my lighting fabricator, Peter Tran.
